Not all water leaks are created equal. There are small leaks that might show themselves readily with pooling water or a drop in water pressure. Then, there are the scarier leaks that lurk underneath the foundation of your home and hide most signs of their existence until they’re ready to do some serious damage.
When you’re dealing with the latter, which is a concrete slab leak, detection and repair are often challenging and costly. There are a few warning signs you can keep a lookout for though that will tell you it’s time to call a specialist about a potential slab leak.
1) Hot Spots
About 80% of all slab leaks occur in the hot water line running underneath a home. As hot water continues to seep out, it will begin to warm the floor above it. If you come across any hot spots, your hot water pipe may be the culprit.
2) Water Bill Increase
A sudden and noticeable increase in your water bill usually indicates a severe leak somewhere in your house. If you start to get suspicious, look for any noticeable leaks. If you can’t find something, there’s a good chance you’re dealing with a slab leak and should call a leak detection specialist.
3) Flooring Damage
Slab leaks often go undetected for a while, giving them time to leak enough water to warp or cause other damage to your flooring. You may notice cracks, signs of water damage, pooling water, or raised areas on your floor if you have a slab leak that has been at work for some time.
4) Running Water Sound
Think you hear running water as you walk around your house? You’re not crazy—it just might be a concrete slab leak. Try turning off all of your fixtures, including your water heater, and head to the basement or lowest level of the house. If you can still hear running water, then you likely have a slab leak.
